A Superdelegate in regards to the Democratic National Convention is someone who holds absolute power in who they can vote for. They’re in charge of casting their vote for a candidate without pledging beforehand. The difference between a pledged delegate and an unpledged delegate is that the pledged delegate is chosen based on their voters preference towards a particular candidate – voters cast their ballots and the ratio of the candidate’s vote is applied to the pledged delegate’s representation.
Unpledged delegates are not required to support a candidate openly and thus, the term “Superdelegate” is coined. Superdelegates are often Governors, Congressmen/women, and leaders of various Caucuses. Superdelegates have the power to swing an election and the ability to stop grassroots movements within the Democratic Party, as seen in the 2016 Democratic Primary results between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. They’re also the perfect targets of corruption because of their close association to the candidate they eventually support.
On February 12, 2016, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee, was presented with a question by CNN‘s Jake Tapper, “What do you tell voters who are new to the process who say this makes them feel like it’s all rigged?”
Schultz’s replied: “Unpledged delegates exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grass-roots activists. We are, as a Democratic Party, really highlight and emphasize inclusiveness and diversity at our convention, and so we want to give every opportunity to grass-roots activists and diverse committed Democrats to be able to participate, attend and be a delegate at the convention. And so we separate out those unpledged delegates to make sure that there isn’t competition between them.“
Democratic Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (58) from the 11th district of Ohio was a supporter of Hillary Clinton and would’ve been the Superdelegate for the 2008 Democratic Presidental Primary. On August 19, 2008, two weeks before the Primary, Tubbs Jones was found dead from an aneurysm in her brain. Policemen suspected Tubbs Jones of drunk driving and followed her car until it veered off road and came to a stop in a nearby field. She was admitted into ICU at Huron Hospital and put on life support. She died on August 20 due to extensive bleeding of the brain. Democrat Marcia Fudge was chosen to run in the place of Tubbs Jones and won the ballots that November.
The second Superdelegate death on our list is Clinton friend and politician Bill Gwatney (48). On August 23, 2008, less than two months before the Democratic Primary, and three days after the death of Democratic Rep. Tubbs Jones; Timothy Johnson positioned himself in the lobby of the Democratic Party Headquarters located in Little Rock, Arkansas — Johnson requested to speak to then State Chair of the Democratic Party of Arkansas Bill Gwatney about a volunteering role and then proceeded to shoot the politician three times. Bill Gwatney was pronounced dead immediately. The gunman escaped in a truck and led police on a high-speed chase; he was killed when his vehicle wrecked during a police PIT maneuver that was implemented. There have been rumors that Bill Gwatney was part of Obama’s strategy to “rig” the 2008 Primaries.
Fast forward to the 2016 Democratic Presidental Primary — We have individuals connected to the DNC who have had suspicious deaths.
On July 10 of 2016, DNC Staffer Seth Rich (27) was shot twice in the back in a neighborhood of Washington DC; the initial motive was believed to be related to a botched robbery although no items were taken from Seth’s possession. Investigator Rod Wheeler believes the FBI and the local police were told to “back down” from the murder case.
38-year-old Process Server Shawn Lucas rose to fame on July 3, 2016, through a Youtube video posted of himself accompanied by a cameraman entering the DNC headquarters on July 1, 2016, to serve a lawsuit related to the misconduct of then DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman. The video went viral and provided insight into Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC’s agenda into suppressing the platform and votes of the Bernie Sanders’ campaign.
The revelation of the lawsuit took place less than three weeks before the July 22, 2016, WikiLeaks/DNC dump of emails that would prove the allegations against the DNC to be true; Debbie Wasserman resigned from her position after the revelations.
On August 2, 2016, the lifeless body of Shawn Lucas was found in a bathroom by his girlfriend Savannah King in the apartment they shared. In November 2016, after months of questions and no answers, lab results from the Office of the DC Medical Examiner contributed his cause of death to “Combined adverse effects of fentanyl, cyclobenzaprine, and mitragynine.”
Marcia Fudge replaced Tubbs Jones after her untimely death and then replaced DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz after the DNC Scandal.
